Prom Queen

Well, yesterday morning dawned dank and dismal, but by lunchtime the long-awaited heatwave was putting in an appearance.  Just in time for the event of the year ... in our household anyway!


Miss Millie's Leaver's Ball took place last night, and I had a tear in my eye when my shy little girl turned into a beautiful, sophisticated young lady before my very eyes ...


Millie had said she wanted something different for her prom dress, and I was rather daunted by this, as I really don't like shopping, especially when I don't really know what I'm looking for.  However, I did a Vintage Fair  in my hometown on Easter Saturday, and as there were lots of racks of dresses, I rang Millie to come over and have a look, as you just never know ...


Among the rails, Millie found a beautiful, apple green, full length dress.  I was dubious at first, but she tried it on and it fit like a glove ... a real Cinderella moment! We bought it, along with a vintage pink and green necklace, and I was so happy that I'd been spared the trauma of numerous fittings in plush prom shops ...

It is an original, 1950's Dellwood Model dress, oozing Hollywood glamour! We had it altered to ballerina length, by a lovely lady, and bought a 50's style full net underskirt to go under it ...


A friend arranged the transport ... an amazing, vintage e-type Jaguar arrived to collect Millie, so she really turned up in style!


 This is my favourite photograph, and I fiddled about with the filters, but much prefer it in black and white ...


When we arrived (me following on behind in my battered Micra), Millie met her friends, who all looked amazing too ...


I stayed until they went into dinner, scrutinising admiring everyone's clothes, and if I'm not mistaken, I think Millie's was the only original vintage one there.  I'm probably biased, but I liked hers best, and I'm glad she stuck to her guns and went for something different.  I went home very happy and a very proud Mammy!

I haven't downloaded the pictures from my camera yet, these are from my Instagram feed so they are a bit blurry and grainy so I may bore you with more ....

    Hi Claire Millie looks absolutely stunning in her dress, its good to be different, prom dresses are so predictable. I know when Alice had her prom she wanted a plain dress, not long or fussy, she found one in T K Max or all places very plain but with a lot of fringing on the bottom, like a flapper dress, she was the only one with a short dress on and stood out from all the pink fluff! Good for Millie. Julie.xxx

    She looks gorgeous - love the vintage frock - nice to see someone going with their own look rather than the identikit norm :)

    No Proms this year for either of my two - however next summer there are two!!!

    Absolutely gorgeous ......dress and young lady....beautiful combination. I look forward to a close up of the dress to admire it some more. I do also like the way Millie did her hair as it suits her no end.

      Ooh Jenny I can't take any credit for her hair! Our lovely hairdresser did that, with a pic of Brigitte Bardot to copy off ... Lots of back combing and Kirkby grips were involved xx

    Ooh, yes please to more Proud Mummy pics! Millie looks absolutely gorgeous - I love that she went for the vintage look, and a wee bit different from the norm. It suits her so well, she's beautiful. Love the dress, love the hair, just love, love, love...

      She had a lovely evening Sarah, than you so much. I'm so happy she found the dress (or the dress found her) as I really feel it was made for her the fit was so good. Most vintage dresses we see are absolutely tiny, but this was made for a curvy girl and fit perfectly.

    Millie looks lovely and the dress was a real find - definitely much nicer than something from a High Street shop! Her hair looks fab, and what a car! I for one will be delighted to see more photos - I keep looking over the ones we took on Monday of my daughter's getting-ready-for-'Prom'. Tear to the eye most times I do!

    Claire she looks beautiful and the dress is a dream. My daughter's prom was 3 years ago now - she too wanted something different and went for a 'Hell Bunny' short gothic frock which looked stunning - and (although I'm biased) looked so eyecatching amongst the rainbow of froth and glitter. Glad she had a good time - good memories for the Mommy memory bank ;)

    Oh Claire, Millie looks beautiful. Her dress is absolutely gorgeous. It was obviously meant to be. Don't tell her friends but Millie's dress looks stunning in comparison to theirs. I bet she was thrilled to be arriving in such a gorgeous car, nothing but the best for such a pretty lady. Hope you didn't have to use too many tissues as a proud Mum.

    Oh I'd love to see more photos, Millie looks wonderful! How proud you must be, I loved watching all the teenagers arrive last year at my son's prom - of course all we had to do was buy a plain suit & tie! I can't wait for all the fuss of finding a dress when it's my daughter's turn, a few years away yet!

      Ooh P, I know! I get really wistful when I look at pictures of my children when they were little, but we can't keep them like that forever, can we?

      Is it me, or do the years seem to be passing more quickly, the older we get?

      You're very kind Gillian! Millie does have great style and puts things together that I would never have dreamed of, with great results! She doesn't like shopping on the high street though ... she likes nothing more than rooting through a rail at a charity shop or car boot sale!

    She does look truly gorgeous. I'd be very proud too for a daughter who is confident enough to want to be individual. Not as easy at that age. I was never a follower at 16 and used to make my boyfriend's younger brother roar with laughter at the clothes I wore. He found it truly entertaining.
    What a great start to the evening too Claire having the jag to get her there.
