Looking thru' the windows

Making Decisions

When we looked at this house for the first time, I fell in love with the original 1936 bay window in the back room. Five cold winters later, we have come to the realisation that they sadly have to go. Each morning I have to mop the window sills and wipe each soaking window pane down.  There are gaps in the leading where the wind blows through, and some are cracked.

My husband spent his fortnight's holiday 2 summers ago, stripping them back, filling gaps with putty, and painting them ... a real labour of love, but however much we look after them, they are rusted and the wood is rotting beyond repair.  The order is in for brand spanking new upvc (not my favourite thing) which hopefully will reduce our astronomical heating bills ... the heat is just flying out of the gaps.  We live by the sea, so maintenance on wooden windows would be constant ... we may get French windows which lead onto the garden (which the chickens have desecrated!) so my job for the summer is sorting the garden out.  Please tell me I'm doing the right thing ..... x

  1. Sometimes you just have to go for it, and I think you are doing the right thing, you won't know yourselves next winter, all toastie and warm, and once there in they will look lovely I'm sure... My chickens have destroyed my garden too, my lawn is a mud patch! they do lay a good egg though!! x

  2. Aw thanks, I know we've got to do it, it's just I hate getting rid of old things, just think they always look nicer than new ones! My chickens started off with a run, then the side garden too. They flew over the gate into the back garden, and then ventured into the neighbours ... were there's a will there's a way, but need to reclaim back some of my garden! x

  3. Hi just found your blog, I know what you mean about windows, we moved from the edge of the Lake District to Dorset a year ago, and have had UPVC windows put in our terraced cottage, although we did have UPVC sliding sash in the front to match all the row, they do look good and the difference they make is amazing and no mopping up! my husband was hesitant as he is a joiner and only works in wood! but he would'nt be without them now. Go for it! Your chickens sound very happy. Take a look over at my blog. Julie xxx
