One a penny, two a penny, hot cross buns!

And a very happy Good Friday to you all, my lovelies! I hope that today is finding you all fit and well, it's a beautiful day here, and I am watching the world go by from my sickbed! I have once again succumbed to the dreaded lurgy, which only seems to happen to me at holiday time ... this weekend I was to have had a stall at a very big Vintage Fair, which I've been preparing for weeks ... but never mind, worse things happen!

The title of today's post comes from a bit of reminiscing ... remembering the Good Friday's of my childhood, when the only shop open was the bakers ... it was the one day a year when you bought Hot Cross Buns ... they were special then, not like now, when you can buy them practically every day of the year! And they were definitely more spicy, glossier and bigger ... don't get me started on the size of Creme Eggs!

Hope you all have a lovely Easter weekend, and will catch up soon!

Love Claire xxx

  1. Oh Claire, poor you! Hope you are soon feeling much better and able to enjoy the sunshine (long may it continue!) Sad to have missed out on the fair, and sad too for the people who will be missing the opportunity to buy your wares. I agree about hot cross buns and could add - what's all this with varying the flavour? Dried fruit and mixed spices, plus a jolly good cross is all that is required - chocolate and orange? What's that all about?

  5. I remember when - as a dare- I tried to get a whole chocolate digestive in my mouth sideways without breaking it - impossible. Now I could probably manage two or three! Keep yourself warm and cosy and hopefully that nasty lurgy will be on it's way for good. Happy Easter x Jane

  7. Like you, I often found/find that my off days are when it's a holiday... not that it makes any difference to us since my husband only works part time now and we don't celebrate these public holidays anyway. At the moment I have another health scare ongoing, not to be resolved until further tests next week, and trying not to worry about it.
    Hope you feel better soon.

  9. Oh dear Claire, not good to be ill on the holidays :( I hope your family is remembering you and bringing you some hot tea and keeping you comfortable through this bout. I am going to be MAKING hot cross buns today!! My husband said "I'll just pick some up at the grocery store", but that just wouldn't do. I like homemade buns like Mom used to make :) The sun is pouring into my kitchen at the moment, so it seems a good time to get onto that. Take care Claire, and hope you feel better before the weekend is over. XOX Wendy

  10. I hope you feel better soon! I'm also stuck in bed with the flu today so missing out on a vintage fair. Though I was only going as a buyer not a seller so at least my bank account is healthier! I hope you feel well enough to enjoy the rest of Easter, Mrs RV x

  11. Thank you ladies, for all your kind comments ... I've decided to bite the bullet while I'm feeling a little better, and have loaded the car. It will be an early start in the morning and if I feel bad I won't go, but otherwise it will be a bonus if I make it ... For my bank balance and for clearing some stock! Have a lovely weekend xxx

  13. Claire, your post set me to remembering 'vintage" celebrations of Easter I have known as well...including some with hot cross buns :) Tonight I hope to attend a production called The Bridge. I am a member of a church that uses drama to celebrate life with Christ, the same beliefs of my childhood, but a different form of worship service.

I hope you fair well at your fair today and that you and yours are blessed in all you do.

    xx,
    Gracie

  20. Hope you feel better soon Claire! Isnt it typical to get ill just before something special you are looking forward to and have been planning for ages? I love hot cross buns, but I wish we could go back to just being able to get them around easter time again as we did years ago.I have to say I dont buy them apart from this time of year though.
