Last week, Blogland was atwitter with excitement, preparing for the long awaited Kirstie's Vintage Home which was aired on C4 last Thursday. Since then, I've heard nothing. Apologies if you have done a post on the programme and I've missed it, but I thought we would be awash with comments and opinions.
On the other hand, hats off to Kirstie, if she can persuade people to upcycle old furniture instead of sending it to landfill, then that's all to the good. Forgive me if I'm getting this wrong, I only watched the programme once, so I may have missed things, but when the flat was emptied, I hope the stuff that was going was recycled, because I've found that whatever you advertise on Freecycle, there is always someone out there who will want it.
The true vintage home to me is one full of eclectic treasures gleaned over the years from family, friends and often the grubbiest of charity shops. It can't be made overnight, but evolves and matures over the years, staying the same, yet always subtly changing with a little find tucked in here and there, easily blending in with the rest of the landscape.
I must admit the 1960's, which is the era in which I was born, is not my favourite, home style-wise. While I love the music and the clothes and the sheer exuberance of the decade, I struggle a bit with the decor. My daughter, Millie, loves all things 60's (especially the Fab Four) and I love the way she puts different things together from this time. My sister Helen is also planning a 60's/70's Living Room, and I'm looking forward to helping her source furniture and bits'n'pieces for it. Kirstie is embracing the 1950's this week, so I'm looking forward to that.
I don't really prefer any decade, as I said before, my home is an eclectic mix spanning the past 70 years and even before. If I like something, I usually find a place for it, I couldn't live in a home which is dedicated rigidly to a particular time, although I admire people who live like this. My family would object for one thing ... they just about put up with my eccentricities as it is, and I do like the comforts of the 21st century!
The programme reminded me a bit of House Doctor and (I think I've made this up, but you catch my drift) Clutter Busters! Let's face it, the flat was quite messy and unorganised to begin with, and just with a good tidy up and decluttering session, would have looked 100% better, without having to spend an arm and a leg.
The room was stripped bare of any character and a few iconic pieces were added. The child's mountain of toys was magically secreted away in a Tardis bedding box, revamped by Kirstie. In the real world, were would they have gone?
It was the bedroom that made me question why it was called Kirstie's Vintage Home. To be fair, an upcycled chest of drawers was brought in, and a couple of bevelled mirrors were hung on the wall. But the star of the show was the bedspread, lovingly made with brand new fabric, featuring an image that meant something to the gentleman of the house. To me, vintage and thriftiness go hand in hand. I know this is not a rule of thumb, this is only how I live, but really, who has the money to pay for their own bespoke hand-printed fabric. Surely a vintage bedspread would consist of fabrics taken from long-ago summer dresses, embroidered tablecloths, Nana's antimacassars and Aunty Vi's rosy curtains?
Please don't think I'm trying to say I know everything about the vintage home or that I'm an expert ... I'm far from it ... my home is personal to me and not everyone's cup of tea. Nor would I want it to be. I like to be different, but I am always learning. I think C4 should visit the lovely blogs which I follow, and commission a programme featuring real women who embrace the vintage lifestyle on a shoestring.
Anyone, with a fat wallet, could create 'faux' vintage style in a day ... the high street is brimming with flowery cups and saucers, teapots, lots of ribbon and bows, cupcakes adorning everything from bunting to pincushions, but to me it lacks something ... the faded charm of an old crackled cup and saucer, the frayed beauty of a vintage knitting bag and the glamour that exudes from a much-loved photograph album.
Whilst very pretty, a lot of the new buys don't have staying power. They're part of our materialistic, throw-away society, which I shy away from. Don't get me wrong, I do buy new things (usually that look old!) and fit them in along with the genuine finds, but I think that true vintage style has genuine, old items as the backbone, with newer items thrown in to lighten the mix, and not the other way round.
In my head, I always have a wish-list. A while ago, top of the list was a pair of rosy, flowery 100 inch long curtains for my Front Room. I found them (above) for £10 at a car-boot sale, but had quite a long wait for them. That's the secret, you have to be patient ... all the money in the world can't buy true vintage style, it takes time, it takes patience and most of all it takes vision. The vision to imagine how a certain grubby item can be transformed into an item of beauty that can shine once more.
In my ideal world, if I could pick the presenters of Vintage Home, they would be Tif and Rachelle, aka Dotty Angel and Ted & Agnes, authors of the fabulous Granny Chic. They definitely know what they are talking about, and would not be employing a crew of behind the scenes artisans, to actually produce the props, but would be hands-on themselves, each week featuring a different blog writer and giving them their 15 minutes of fame!
In a couple of weeks, I'm off to Harrogate, to the Country Living Fair, where I will be spending my hard earned cash on treasures old and new ... Rachelle is going to be there, can't wait to meet her!
This Thursday evening at 8pm you will find me snuggled on the sofa in my pj's, pot of tea and cupcake by my side, watching Kirstie's Vintage Home ... I'm scared of missing something ... although, I have to say, I've crossed the book off my Christmas list ...
Please don't ring me while it's on... I haven't got Sky, I'm afraid!
Who would you like to present a homestyle show, and what did you think of Kirstie's Vintage Home?
Love from Claire xxx
Hi Claire
ReplyDeleteVery jealous of your trip to Harrogate to the Country Living Show, always wanted to go there but never got, (love Harrogate for shopping especially Cath Kidston shop) I think the one in London was last week so will have to wait until next year. My friend Jo in Cumbria was supposed to be helping on a stall exhibiting there, but she got pushed out of her bed for the night by the stall holders boyfriend wanting to go (long story). Yes Kirsty's show was a bit of a let down, they go over the same thing dont they, I do love her but like the crafty and Christmas ones best. Have a good time. Julie xxxx
Hello Julie, what a shame for your friend ... men!! I went to the CL Spring Fair in London a couple of years ago with Millie, it was fab ... am glad it's come a bit nearer though! Am looking foirward to visiting CK in Harrogate, didn't know there was one, so that's a bonus! Hope you manage to make the Spring Fair next year!
DeleteLove Claire xx
I watched KVH and was incredibly annoyed by it. They spent £50 on new knobs for the chest of drawers, and then she said "And you can easily change the knobs if you change your colour scheme" Furthermore, that printed fabric was SO expensive. You made a perceptive remark about "A fat wallet" So many young couples are struggling to pay their mortgage, and want to create a lovely home - but Kirstie with her inherited millions sometimes forgets what life is like in the real world. And I agree with you, waiting for the right vintage piece is often cheaper and much more satisfying.
ReplyDeletePleased to read your comments though! blessings xx [ps enjoy the CL fair!]
DeleteHello Angela, thanks for your comments ... I totally agree, it's as though Kirstie has no grasp of real life, and by saying that you can change things is against the vintage ethic of make do and mend.
Have a lovely week xx
Kirsty clearly has no grasp on reality. I read THE MOST ANNOYING article ever last year. Kirsty was stating that she was a very hands on Mum, and ONLY had a cleaner, nanny four days a week and someone to help with the cooking (from memory so may not be exactly right). What an absolute joke.
Delete
DeleteHaha, this made me laugh ... but she scours skips and knocks on doors to ask for the contents on her way home, so you have to hand it to her Helen! She is very thrifty if we believe what we are told xxx
Living here in the States obviously I haven't seen the show, but I know exactly what you're talking about. Vintage doesn't happen over night, how silly.
ReplyDelete
DeleteHello, thanks for popping in ... you're always most welcome!
Love Claire xx
Ooo this is a great post,
ReplyDeleteGoing back to the 90's I used to watch avidly changing rooms. Of course now looking back you can joke about their themed rooms and it did become rather staged with some of the designers going out of their way to create rooms that the participants had already said they hated. And the fact that all the rooms were themed! But at the heart of it mostly it was about up cycling and making something out of nothing. I watched it avidly every week. Then I guess everyone would rather buy new stuff and not bother with older furniture. I have to say over the years I like a bit of both I dont mind buying new sometimes but have always made over old furniture for years. And more and more now this is the way I am going.
I like Kirsty and her no nonsense approach but I do agree that some of the bargins are not really that barginous at all. And I think might put people off with the whole vintage/recycle thing. I do agree that the show could do with a little more something and perhaps more about the crafts themselves and how to transform old furniture for very little and I do agree the makers of the show would have to look no further than blogland. I will still watch the show as I just love those sort of programmes and take from it whatever I can. But come channel 4 I think you can do this better!
Sorry for the long waffly post hope it makes sense! Your home looks lovely by the way.
P x
DeleteThanks Paula!
Ooh, Changing Rooms ... that had some disasters didn't it ... but was the forerunner of all the homestyle shows that have been aired since then ... was definitely one of a kind though!
Love Claire xx
Lovely photos - your home looks so cosy and inviting.
ReplyDelete
DeleteThank you so much, what a kind comment!
Claire xx
Great post Claire and exactly what I thought after I had watched the programme.
ReplyDeleteI was so looking forward to it but like you I was so disappointed.
I thought the lounge and the bedroom could have been from two completely different houses. I was left feeling slightly confused as to what exactly made it a vintage home.
: ) x
DeleteGreat minds think alike, haha!
I've just been looking at photos of the show and the bedroom just looks totally modern as though it's been purchased from a catalogue, despite using an old chest of drawers and mirrors. Modern blinds, etc ... just doesn't work somehow.
Love Claire xx
I agree with you too, Claire. I'd saved it on Sky+ and just watched it yesterday, and have to say I was really disappointed. I loved her Handmade Home & her Christmas shows, but so far, I'm not overly enamoured with this one. I too will continue to watch it, as I do like Kirstie. And it struck me at the beginning too, that the house just needed a really good tidy-up & declutter to begin with! That's the first thing I'd do if I knew Kirstie was coming to visit ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great & honest post,
Have a good week, xx
DeleteOoh, imagine Kirstie coming to visit .. it would have to be a mammoth spring clean ... K doesn't mince her words, does she?
Love Claire xx
I totally agree,I really enjoyed the show but why did they have to take them all the way to London from Edinburgh, it makes it look as though these things can only be done in the trendy parts of the capital. Wouldn't it have been better to show how to find a vintage home on your doorstep.
ReplyDeleteGillx
DeleteGood point well made, Gill! I hadn't taken that on board, but yes, it would have been better if she'd sourced places in Edinburgh, then they could have gone back to them at a later date, as well as drumming up a bit of local business. It would have been great to find places dotted around the country, but looks like it will be London all the way!
Love Claire xx
Hi You! .. no .. I didn't watch Kirsty. I'm afraid .. although I like her and her style of presenting I got bored with her shows. They all seemed a bit sameish ..and game show-y. Like you and others have said a Vintage home evolves over time and what is one persons style/choice isnt anothers ... what one persons Grannie had .. and said person just loved it .. the other persons Grannie may have had something completely different. making 'Vintage Homes all very different ... a crcheted blanket and scrap of rosey fabric does not a Vintage Home inspire.
ReplyDeleteWell you get my drift...
Have a good time ar Harrogate.
Vicky x
Hello Vicky, I certainly do get your drift, but I'm afraid that although I'm moaning, I will still watch every week, because I just can't not! I've crossed the book off my Christmas list though!
DeleteLove Claire xx
I have to confess that I too was a bit disappointed with the program, I'm just hoping that the series gets better as it goes along, although I'm sure I will watch it anyway, I just can't resist :-)I love your photos by the way they're beautiful xx
ReplyDeleteHello Kay, thanks for your kind comments ... I know I'll watch it every week too!
DeleteLove Claire xx
Here, here, Mrs Thriftwood, I think I can safety say you speak for a lot of us on here...
ReplyDeletekirsty seems to be doing what us vintage girls have already been doing for a while now and if I might add not doing it quite so well really! Those knobs were crazy expensive!I must admit I will also still be tuning in with cup of tea on Thursday evening. Getting off me soap box now, see you Thursday.
Love Maria x
Hi Maria!
DeleteLooking forward to putting the world to rights on Thursday!
Love Claire xxx
I can't believe I missed this show, but I will be watching from now on, so I'll have to get back to you.;-)
ReplyDeleteArwedd xx
You may not learn anything Arwedd, but you will definitely be entertained!
DeleteLove Claire xx
Hello Claire,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for popping by with your kind comment.Just watched the show and I agree with lots of what you say, vintage style does evolve over time. I wasn't keen on the wallpaper on all 4 walls, it was a bit much, and the quilt was sooo expensive £39 a metre, what a joke!Did you see the beautiful design on the blanket box that they covered up too?
She does make me laugh though, as she made a right pigs ear of spray painting a cardboard letter, getting bits of grass stuck on it and spraying over the top!Tee hee
Rachel x
p.s. love the photos of your home!
Thanks for your kind comments ...
ReplyDeleteI forgot about the mess she made! It definitely wasn't a money-saving programme, was it?
love Claire xxx
That anger, Claire,
ReplyDeleteon Sky see all your English programs ..... I love them,
is a way to feel closer to your marvelous England!
But what Kirstie here do not give it ... grrrrr!
Hopefully later
Love Susy x
Hello Susy
DeleteLovely to hear from you ... Glad you can get our shows!
Claire xxx
I absolutely agree with you Claire. I'm glad you have blogged on this subject because I planned to, but when it came to it I could think of little to say! I thought something was missing too, and like you came to the conclusion that it was my love/hate relationship with the 1960s decor. It was clear that the couple had little money and I didn't think that was really taken into account. Handmade can be (quite rightly) expensive, so if it can't be afforded clearly upcycling is the way forward! Oh well, we shall see what the next episode brings - the 50s is my kinda decade!
ReplyDeleteAnna x
Hello Anna, looking forward to the 50s theme too!
DeleteClaire xx
I agree with you Claire, I felt the programme was lacking something, it didn't fill my vision of a 'vintage home' but I will continue to watch the series :) GoRgEoUs photos by the way!
ReplyDeleteVictoria xx
Hi Victoria, thanks for your lvely comments, hope ths Thursday's better!
DeleteClaire xx
Some really good points here Claire, I like the way the programme explores some of the ideas behind vintage, HOWEVER, anyone can do vintage if they have enough money! Your home is what proper vintage is, you seek out, and wait for the right piece! Your home should be on the show! Saying that, I do enjoy watching Kirsty! :)
ReplyDeleteAww thanks Ada! You should be on with your wallpapers and fabrics ... Oh and your lovely printing trays!
DeleteClaire xx
Here! here! Claire
ReplyDeleteI could not have put it better, I was so glad you reminded me last week that Kirstie was on but after watching the program I felt quite let down , I think the idea of a vintage home was totally lost...I am so glad I am not on my own...yes I shall still watch it again, fingers crossed it picks up!
Her book on Amazon has had some really bad reviews....
Well Claire thats enough of my moaning ...your home looks wonderful I love your little bambi's
Exciting news about your C L tickets don't forget your christmas list!!
Happy Tuesday
Thea x
Hello Thea, lovely to hear from you!
DeleteYou've just hit the nail on the head, that's how I felt, let down! The last series, where K visited country fairs and won all the prizes, I didn't much like, but thought this sounded so promising ...
Hopefully next one will be better
Claire xx
Hi Claire,I agree that the programme wasn't as magical as the others, did you think that they spent sooo much time recapping things? I did expect more vintage and lots of Kirstie looking in charity shops and antique shops for fab things that could have been upcycled so hopefully it will get better,I vote for Jenny from The Custards to give it some magic!I MUST CONFESS I'm not liking your sepia type photo's.I'd prefer them au naturale!Warm Regards Pam.
ReplyDeleteOoh yes Pam, Jenny would be perfect!
DeleteSorry you don't like my pics but I'm afraid I just love Instagram and I find it much easier than using my ordinary camera ... and I love messing about with the different effects!
Have a lvely evening
Claire xxx
If I'm honest Claire, I found it a little disappointing too. I have only seen it once and could probably do with watching it again on my own without my husband twittering in the background (he's not wild about Kirstie). I dont have a vintage style home, its mostly modern but with a few older things dotted about but I do love to see vintage homes on peoples blogs.Yours is wonderful!
ReplyDeletevery interesting post - i forgot that the Kirstie show was on so I will find in on 4od and watch it. It is all a bit contrived, isn't it? But I'd rather watch something like that than Eastenders any day of the week. I'm very jealous that you're off to the Country Living show in Harrogate - have fun! x
ReplyDeleteHello Gillian, just take it all with a large pinch of salt! I'd rather watch that than Eastenders too ... I wasn't slating the actual programme, it is an enjoyable watch, just not realistic for most people's budgets!
DeleteThanks for dropping in!
Claire xxx
You mustn't ever watch it with your husband Anne ... It's just not done ... Don't think any husband s fond of Kirstie, I think she's too bossy and forthright! Can just imagine the twittering ... Steve wukd twitter too if he was allowed in the room!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your lovely comments
Claire xxx
A 'nice' programme that doesn't mean to cause offence, never mind £50 for knobs, and whilst very beautiful how many young couples with a baby can afford to paper their bedroom with £50 a roll Rob Ryan wallpaper these days.
ReplyDelete
DeleteI agree, it is a 'nice., easy programme, just not realistic for the type of people who will be watching it. People who want to save money by doing things for themselves, without having to shell out a fortune for said projects!
Thanks for popping in! xx
Hear hear! Just what I would have written, but I wouldn't have put it so well. I felt the "buy a screenprinting kit" idea was a bit daft. It looked great but I couldn't afford to buy it for just one piece of furniture. It's unlikely I would find much more use for the kit. Personally, making a runner out of an old curtain and some bits of table and tray cloths to go on said piece of vintage furniture is more me and much thriftier. Most things seemed to take an initial outlay that was beyond my budget. Yes, doing this thing myself would cost less than paying hundreds of pounds for it in a swanky shop but I wouldn't spend hundreds of pounds on anything other than a mattress or a vital appliance, anyway, because I can't! And taking a white box of a room and making it better is not that difficult. Now moving into a house with floral wallpaper you can't afford to change and making THAT stylish is! I did enjoy the programme, I do belive she would skip-dive and I do believe she has rescued, recycled, vintage, re-vamped stuff in her house. I have no idea of the house she lives in but generally a large, Edwardian or earlier house with well-proportioned rooms is much easier to make look chic with a rusty bird cage and a chipped painted chest of drawers. Do that in a 60's box or a 90's bungalow! (Most of us have probaly already done that and it takes real style to pull it off!)
ReplyDelete
DeleteVery well said Attila! In my last home I had to blend in a maroon bathroom suite and big squared traditional carpet, because we couldn't afford to change either! Kirstie lives in London, but also has that gorgeous house which featured on Kirstie's Homemade Home, for a holiday home. It's about as big as my street.
Thanks for your comments!
Claire xx
I was so interested to read this as I only watched it this afternoon. I do like Kirsty, bless her, I really don't believe she has a clue what it's like down here on planet earth, and when she said £39 a metre for the fabric, I nearly fell off my very snuggly, bought from the local hospice shop, sofa at less than the fabric cost!!! But like you, I shall stay glued to every episode as I have her previous series, just hoping maybe there'll be something there. Off to read everyone else's comments. xx
ReplyDeleteHi Cheryl, I think you're right ... Kirstie just wants everything to look nice and for you to have fun while you do it, but doesn't think that the average person won't be able to afford the initial outlay!
DeleteI have a whole cottage suite that cost £6 more than the fabric.
Love, Claire xxx
Hi Claire,
ReplyDeleteLovely post and we will have to wait a while before the new show come over here.
My daughter and I loved sitting down together watching Kirstie's Homemade home and her Christmas show.
You have a really beautiful home and loved seeing all your lovely photos. Hope that you have a wonderful time at the Country Fair.
Happy week
hugs
Carolyn
DeleteI'm sure you'll enjoy it ... just adapt Kirstie's ideas to suit you!
Thank you for your very kind comments ... am envious of your daffodils ... I love Spring!
Love Claire xxx
Ooo Claire - you have sparked a very interesting discussion here. I too watched the programme - it being one of those programmes that I can huff and puff my way through. Do you know they type - the ones where you start making comments and mutter a bit under your breath. Not too much vintage but lots of 'vintage style'. The only bit that I liked was the screen print on the wooden furniture.
ReplyDeleteI agree that in reality that house just needed a good tidy up (I can identify with that bit!!) and a bit of shoving. Will I watch the next one? Of course! I like huffing and puffing!
More importantly I love your house!
Best wishes
Jenny
PS Come on ladies - together we could make a BLOCKBUSTER
Hello Jenny ... you've already been nominated by Geopam to present the show!
ReplyDeleteI agree, it would be fabulous ... real money-saving vintage!
Thanks for popping in!
Claire xx
I was really interested to hear what you thought of Kirtie's "Vintage" programme. I'm not a vintage girl but I really didn't think it reflected what I would imagine to be a vintage home. Your right to me it was a bit like "House Doctor" meets "The Hoarder Next Door". Saying that I enjoyed it and will still be watching. Next I need to pick your brain. My son's allergic to cleaning products so I used your water/vinegar mix. How much water to vinegar, my house has been smelly like a chippy. Have a lovely week.
ReplyDeleteAli x
Hi Ali, sorry to her of your little lad's allergies ... get a new litre sized spray bottle, nearly fill with ordinary water and then just add 2-3 capfuls of white vinegar. If you can, and your son isn't allergic to it, add a drop of washing up liquid or a nice smelling essential oil. White vinegar doesn't smell as strongly as malt and should fade quite quickly. Hope this helps!
ReplyDeleteClaire xx
Hello again Claire,
ReplyDeletethank you for your sweet comment about my Peter Pan collar!
Let's see what Kirstie gets up too on this weeks programme!
Have a lovely day

Am watching at this very moment!

Hello ! Oh I so agree with you about the Kirsty programme ...I was so disappointed...I did enjoy the last series and am hoping tonight's programme is better!! I am not a fan of the 60's but I found their take on it very unimaginative and expensive anyway.....fingers crossed for tonight. Lovely to see you on Sunday your stall looked great ! Gail x
ReplyDeleteHi Gail, was lovely to see you on Sunday too, hope you liked your finds, and might see you thus Sunday too?
DeleteLove, Claire xx
I couldn't believe they took out the beautiful fireplace! I thought it was one of the best features in the house.
ReplyDeleteI know! When did 60's homes have a little opening stacked with logs? Just hope they didn't tip it! Talk about make do and mend ... Not!
ReplyDeleteClaire xx
Loved the 2 rooms, didn't think I would like the bedroom but I did! We could have done it cheaper though Claire!!! :) x
ReplyDeleteMuch cheaper Ada! Loved the dipped baskets muchly .... NOT!

here here claire!
ReplyDeleteWill give it another go this week its recorded, but I do so agree with all of your points...

Hello Daisy! I think everyone agrees! In some respects this weeks was better than ast, but in other respects was ten times worse! Paint dipped baskets, anyone?
DeleteClaire xx
Hi Claire..
ReplyDeleteThe last message sent before I had finished...:p
Just wanted to say that I too was disappointed with the first episode. I loved the idea of the show, but it was a bit lacking.
I am going to give the second episode a chance..hopefully it will get better.
Have a lovely day and a great weekend x
Magie
Hi Magie! Hope you weren't too disappointed ....

While I can not view the program you mentioned, Claire, I appreciate the philosophy you follow in decorating your home and have an eclectic *style* that reflects my interests more than a particular era. I enjoy Alicia's decorating she shares in her blog, Posy Gets Cozy, and Lucy from Attic 24 as well as many others. xx from Gracie
ReplyDeleteHello Gracie, just be thankful you can't watch this terrible programme!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your lovely comments ... I love those blogs too!
Claire xxx
I agree with a lot of what you say Claire. Out of curiousity I had a look on the iplayer and then fell asleep when the furniture was on the pavement (my interest was seriously sliding before then though). I fail to understand the need to bring this style to people who don't live this way. It really is a taste and a passion that on the whole you've always had. I loved old clothes, furniture, bits and bobs and making from a very young age before we called it vintage. It was just stuff that I liked that was old and secondhand. Soon it will pass on as a fashion and those of us that love it and have always loved it will carry on in our own way while Kirstie will be embracing the new style in order to keep her career on track. Programmes like Wartime Farm hit the spot far more for me than this nonsense.
ReplyDeleteX
Hello Lisa, you've hit the nail on the head ... we've always lived like this, liking old things, being totally misunderstood by the vast majority ... Kirtie's 'doings' are just a fad, to people wanting to be 'on trend' and will all fade into insignificance and landfill in no time at all. If only we could persuade C4 how to do a programme showing how it's really done ... and on a shoestring with no high street making an appearance at all! xxx
